In the run-up to the start of its 100th Anniversary, Cambridge-based charity for CamSight (founded in 1912) has been officially chosen as the charity to benefit from Cambridge United's match against Braintree on Boxing Day. On the organisation's Facebook page, CamSight members and volunteers have described themselves as 'thrilled' by the news.
Cambridge United are also the first non-League club to offer live commentary at games for visually impaired fans, according to a recent feature in Cambridge News. A scheme organised by Cambridge Fans United with the support of CamSight will aim to give blind and partially sighted supporters of both United and the visiting side the chance to enjoy the game in their favoured part of the R Costings Abbey Stadium via short-wave radio.
Originally, it was the RNIB which developed the Soccer Sight project to provide an audio description service for visually impaired football fans. 'We did a taster day with CamSight last season' a CFU spokesperson told the News, 'and we had some volunteer commentators from Peterborough come to one of the games, and those guys were fantastic.' CPCB commends CamSight and Cambridge United for their efforts in taking this great idea forward.
