Calling All
Employers! My school needs your help!
In
September we are starting a new Diploma in Society, Health & Development
for students who are interested in a career in the caring professions. The Diploma has been written in consultation
with employers to ensure that students develop the ‘soft’ skills so valued in
the workplace as well as gaining an understanding of what it means to be a
professional in the caring sector.
For
the Diploma to be a success we are absolutely reliant on the support of employers. This support can take the form of work
placements (our students will be looking for a half day a week placement, on a
Monday) when students can observe the practice they are learning in school. If
a placement is difficult then a visit from a professional who is happy to talk
about professionalism in the workplace and how they ensure the principles and
values of the sector are upheld would be most helpful. Or, we would appreciate a copy of a staff
handbook which shows the policies and charters that guide the work of the
setting.
In
addition if there are any training courses being run for employees which have a
couple of unfilled places which could be offered to students (or teachers) so
that we can better understand the challenges presented in caring for the more
vulnerable members of our community this would also be most welcome.
If
you wish to read a little more detail about the Diploma programme I would
recommend the government website www.direct.gov.uk/diplomas
which has a section specifically aimed at employers. If you feel you may be able to offer support
then please do email me on stfsuhun@saffronwaldenessex.sch.uk. Youngsters are often criticised that they are
not ‘work-ready’ at the end of many years in education,
I believe that the Diploma will go a long way to addressing these
criticisms. I do hope you may be able to
help. Thank you!
