The latest on training and funding in Social Care

Common Induction Standards

Following consultation with the sector, Skills for Care has refreshed the Common Induction Standards to ensure they are fit for purpose and reflect current policy and practice. The standards are for people entering social care, and those changing roles or employers within social care. The refreshed Common Induction Standards replace the Common Induction Standards of 2005.

Successful implementation of the Common Induction Standards is a key element in ensuring delivery of high quality care in the UK. The Care Quality Commission's Essential Standards of Quality and Safety highlight the importance and value of a strong and comprehensive induction. The CQC will need to be assured that all new staff have undergone a thorough induction process.

The standards are designed to be met within a 12-week period, during which time care workers will be able to demonstrate provision of high quality care and support. This will result in recognition for the work that they do, and will constitute a basis for future training and qualifications.

Aspiring Leaders in Social Care - National Skills Academy launches new programme

The Skills Academy has just launched its new 'Aspiring Leaders' programme, a leadership course to be delivered with the renowned Ashridge Business School, and aimed at social care managers who aspire to senior management. The programme will equip managers with what they need to be successful leaders in social care.

The first intake will start the programme in early September, with 2 further intakes to follow before Spring 2011. In this first year, the Skills Academy will subsidise half of the £4,950 cost, meaning that employers will pay just £2,750 for each participant.

    Assistive Technology Booklets Available

A new booklet discussing new and emerging roles in assistive technology within social care has been published by Skills for Care. The booklet can be downloaded from here. Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Care Brokerage has a number of paper copies which are available on request (call Patrick on 01223 699317 or email patrick@campetcare.org.uk).

In our region, the uptake of telecare equipment has been steadily on the increase, from just over 6,000 in 2006/7 to a planned 34,000 this year. This equipment will either have been provided by the Local Authority or by another agency or bought by the user, or a member of their family, for use in their own homes. Telecare is a rapidly developing way of supporting someone in their own home, enabling them to remain independent for as long as possible.

This equipment also supports family members and informal carers. For example, a person might be prone to falling out of bed during the night. By use of a pressure sensor pad, a carer sleeping nearby will be alerted and can go to the aid of the person. To take another example: a lamp switches on, triggered by a sensor, when a person leaves their bed, ensuring they can see where they're going, making it safer for them. Some employers in the region are actively embracing assistive technology or are looking at the business case – can this become part of their care provision in the future?
